Prior to the Swim Test
- January 14: Create/update your NBJG account.
- February 1 at 8:00 a.m.: Make a swim test reservation through your NBJG account.
- Make sure you must have all required documents from the "What to Bring" section below.

Swim Test Requirements
Participants must pass the NBJG swim test each year to qualify for the program. Swim times from other programs and/or coaches are not allowed as a means of qualification.
IMPORTANT: The NBJG Program has an enrollment cap of 1,500 participants. A passing swim test does not guarantee enrollment in the program. Learn more about the enrollment cap.

Swim Test Distance
|
Unassisted swim of 100 yards (4 lengths of a 25-yard pool) in the times listed below.
Participant starts in pool/from the wall — no diving in and unassisted in and out of the pool.

Tread Water Time
|
Tread water unassisted for 3 minutes.
The tread water test takes place immediately after the swim.
|
|
Type of Swim Stroke
|
Freestyle stroke is allowed during the swim test.
|
|
Equipment Allowed
|
The only equipment permitted during the swim test is a swimsuit, goggles, and a swim cap.
|
|
Maximum Number of Attempts
|
Participant may try a maximum of 4 times over the course of all tryout days. ***NEW FOR 2027***
Once a swimmer passes the current year's swim test, they cannot try again for a faster time. ***A swim pass and/or golden ticket does not guarantee entrance into the program***

Age Deadlines
|
Program age deadlines are based on your child’s age on June 30 of the current program year. Deadlines are firm.
|

Swim Time Requirement
|
Based on participant's age on June 30, of the current years program:
1:50 - Division D - Age 9
1:45 - Division C - Age 10, 11
1:40 - Division B - Age 12, 13
1:30 - Division A - Age 14, 15 - NEW SWIM TIME!

Swim Test Form
|
ALL PARTICIPANTS must bring a printed and signed swim test form before they are allowed in the pool. The form is found on the "acknowledge & print waiver" tab of your child's account.

Birth Certificate or Passport
|
CHILD ON SWIM FORM DID NOT PARTICIPATE IN PRIOR YEAR'S NBJG SUMMER PROGRAM. If child listed on swim test form did not participate in the prior year's NBJG Program, you must bring their birth certificate or passport for age verification. The document will be returned immediately at check-in.

Proof of Residency
|
ALL NEWPORT BEACH RESIDENTS must show proof of residency annually at the NBJG swim test in order to qualify for a Newport Resident payment window. Residency is for payment registration purposes only, and is not required to participate in the NBJG Program. Participants who do not live in Newport Beach do not need to bring proof of residency.
Who is a Newport Beach resident? A summer home or business does not qualify you as a Newport Beach resident. Residency is for those who intend to live in the City of Newport Beach for six months or more during the course of the current program year. Residency must be established no later than the Monday following the final March swim test.

Parent/Guardian
|
ALL PARTICIPANTS must be accompanied by an adult 18 years or older.
|
|
Proper Swim Equipment
|
ALL PARTICIPANTS are encouraged to wear goggles, a swim cap, and a fitted, race-style swimsuit. Loose boardshorts and ruffled/frilly swimsuits cause drag in the water and will slow swimmers down.

Proof of Newport Beach Residency Documents
IMPORTANT: All proof-of-residency documents must match the name and address of the parent/guardian on the swim test form.
NEW FOR 2027! Acceptable proof of Newport Beach residency includes 4 documents total:
DOCUMENTS 1-3: Bring any THREE of the following - Mortgage/Lease Contract, Property Tax Bill, Utility Bill, Bank Statement/Check, Vehicle Registration
DOCUMENT 4: A Government-Issued Photo ID. This person must be present at swim test check-in to confirm proof of residency.
