Swim test dates and times are subject to change. Swim tests take place rain or shine.

Prior to the Swim Test

  • Create/update your NBJG account beginning January 14.
  • Make a swim test reservation through your NBJG account beginning February 2 at 8:30 a.m.
  • Make sure you must have all required documents from the "What to Bring" section below.
  • Review the How To Enroll page to see next steps after passing the swim test.

 

Swim Test Requirements

Participant must pass the NBJG swim test each year to qualify for the program. Swim times from other programs and/or coaches are not allowed as a means of qualification. 

Swim Test Distance
100 yards (4 lengths of a 25-yard pool) in the times listed below.
Participant starts in pool—no diving in.
Tread Water
NEW THIS YEAR! Tread water unassisted for 3 minutes.
The tread water test takes place immediately after the swim.
Type of Swim Stroke
Any stroke is allowed during the swim test.
Equipment Allowed
The only equipment permitted during the swim test is a swimsuit, goggles, and a swim cap.
Maximum Number of Attempts
Participant may try a maximum of 5 times over the course of all tryout days.
Once a swimmer passes the current year's swim test, they cannot try again for a faster time.
Age Deadlines
Program age deadlines are based on what your child’s age will be on June 30 of the current program year. Deadlines are firm.
Swim Time Requirement
Based on participant's age on June 30, 2026:
1:50 - Division D - Age 9
1:45 - Division C - Age 10, 11
1:40 - Division B - Age 12, 13
1:35 - Division A - Age 14, 15

 

What to Bring

Swim Test Form

ALL PARTICIPANTS

All participants must bring a printed and signed swim test form before they are allowed in the pool. (The form is found on the "acknowledge & print waiver" tab of your child's account.)
Birth Certificate or Passport

NEEDED IF the child listed on swim test form did not participate in the prior year's summer NBJG Program. 

If child listed on swim test form did not participate in the prior year's NBJG Program, you must bring their birth certificate or passport for age verification. The document will be returned immediately at check-in.
Proof of Residency

​​​​​​​NEEDED for ALL Newport Beach residents.

NEW THIS YEAR! ALL Newport Beach residents must provide proof-of-residency in order to register during either of the "Newport Beach Resident" registration windows.

This is required for both new AND returning families. See additional details and "acceptable types of proof" at the bottom of this page.

Newport residency is for registration window purposes only and is not required for participation in the NBJG Program. Participants who do not live in Newport Beach do not need to bring proof of residency.
 Parent/Guardian

ALL PARTICIPANTS 

All participants must be accompanied by an adult 18 years or older.
Proper Swim Equipment

ALL PARTICIPANTS

Should wear goggles, a swim cap, and a fitted, race-style swimsuit. (Loose boardshorts and ruffled/frilly swimsuits cause drag in the water and will slow swimmers down.)

 

Proof of Newport Beach Residency Documents:

Acceptable proof of Newport Beach residency includes (3 documents total):

  1. A Government-Issued Photo ID: The name listed on the proof-of-residency documents must also match the name of the parent/guardian on the swim test form. This person must be present at swim test check-in to confirm proof of residency.
  2. AND TWO of the following*:

Mortgage or Lease Contract,

Property Tax Bill,

Utility Bill,

Bank Statement or Check,

Vehicle Registration

*If your government-issued photo ID from item 1 has your current address, you only need 1 proof-of-residency from item 2.
