The Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard Program is broken into four age group divisions.
Age groups are determined based on your child's age on June 30 of the current program year.
The table below shows the age ranges for the 2018 NBJG Program.
|D||9||July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009|
|C||10 & 11||July 1, 2006 to June 30, 2008|
|B||12 & 13||July 1, 2004 to June 30, 2006|
|A||14 & 15||July 1, 2002 to June 30, 2004|
Division D - Age: 9
Minimum Qualifying Time at Swim Test: 1:55 (100 yards)
The D division is made up of the youngest Junior Lifeguards. This division focuses on acclimating junior guards to the ocean environment and building confidence through fun activities and competitions. The D instructors are experts at helping first time junior guards love their summer!
Division C - Ages: 10-11
Minimum Qualifying Time at Swim Test 1:45 (100 yards)
Sometimes known as "C Nation," the C group is our largest division, making up about half of all our participants. The C Junior Lifeguards compete in many different events and start to increase their depth of knowledge about ocean safety. They are also familiarized with different beach orientation field trips throughout Newport Beach.
Division B - Ages: 12-13
Minimum Qualifying Time at Swim Test: 1:40 (100 yards)
The B division is both fun as well as educational. The B junior lifeguards compete in more challenging events and increase their depth of knowledge about ocean safety and first aid. Returning and new Junior Lifeguards gain a wealth of knowledge and attend a variety of beach orientation field trips throughout Newport Beach.
Division A - Ages 14-15
Minimum Qualifying Time at Swim Test: 1:35 (100 yards)
The A Division meets at Lifeguard Headquarters at the Newport Pier on most days, and provides extra safety to the younger JGs on competition days. This allows them to take the next step in learning more about our diverse beaches, ocean awareness, rescue techniques, and first aid. The Division A JGs really enjoy this expanded role in the program, as they are actually helping and mentoring the younger JGs.
This group of Junior Lifeguards also has an opportunity to participate in some Division-A-Only beach orientation field trips. Last year they took a boat ride to Catalina Island, where they kayaked, snorkeled, hiked and bonded with their friends. They also did a trip to the NAC (Newport Aquatic Center), for a day of stand-up paddling and kayaking through Newport's Upper Back Bay.
What if my child's birthday is on or close to the cut-off date?
In order to maintain the integrity and safety of the program, the birthdate cut-off is firm. We do not allow JG Participants to enroll in lower age group Divisions.
